My Canon Digital Elph is broken again. This is the second time the lense has quit on me. The first time I blogged about it and asked what your favorite DSRL is because I thought about asking for one for Christmas. Then I found out my little point and shoot was still under warranty. They fixed it back in August for FREE! Ya hoo! EXCEPT the repair warranty is only good for three months and guess what? It’s been seven months.
Well, now I’m totally at a lost. I never like to spend unnecessary money but a camera feels NECESSARY to me. To repair this one it will cost $99. To buy a new one it will cost around $300. WAHAHAH! I’ve always thought that a DSLR was the way to go but I’ve not been willing to fork over the $800 + it will cost to get a good one. Sooo, are they truly more reliable? If I have to repair my ELPH every 6mo that’s $198 a year. At that rate I guess it would still take eight repairs in four years to justify a brand new DSLR.
Maybe I can find someone looking to upgrade and I can buy a DSLR used. That might be the best of both worlds.
It’s a sad day when my camera breaks.

that sucks Jess! I have not had to deal with that, though my little sister went through 3 or 4 Nikon Cool Picks before she went to the Canon and she has had better luck now. That and she stopped letting the 2yr old take pictures…!
I have a Canon Power Shot SD1100 and I love it – never had any trouble. But I am meticulous about leaving it in its case and when/where Isaac can take pics. I’d recommend the little point & shoot (I have an SLR, not digital and usually only take the little one) as It fits in a purse, pocket etc.
Cheers and good luck!
That’s the same camera I have. I do love the pictures it takes, the convenience but I can’t seem to make it last!
Is that the lens that came with your camera? The lens that came with my Canon Rebel didn’t last very long, either. We were so disappointed. It always happens after warranty, too. My husband just bought a Canon EFS 18-55mm to replace it.
Speaking of warranty, when my camera needed to be repaired, Canon couldn’t find my warranty proof, so we had to pay. Apparently, none of the 20 pieces of paper I had in my warranty file were the right ones to prove it to them.
I am feeling your pain!!!! Wish I had some good advice, just some sympathy.
Oh mine is just the Canon Power Shot 1100is, not a Rebel so no detachable lens. They’ve replaced the lens once and it needs it again now.
My first repair went well but now it’s out of warranty and I don’t think it’s worth the $$ to fix it.
Sorry to hear about your camera. & hummmmmm I have been thinking about an upgrade????????????????
Let me know Sarah! I’d be very interested in getting a good used camera.
oh no… I agree as a parent of small kids, cameras def seem like necessities… you just can’t get these days back, ya know? I will say that is one area where we splurge on our budget. We switched to a DSLR 2 years ago and I am SO, SO glad we did. You can do it in baby steps… get the camera and one lense… then with Christmas, birthdays, other things… save up for the other items… that’s what we did… now we have a nice zoom lense (2 years later) and a bounce flash… both of which I LOVE… I’d put the bounce flash as second on your list after the camera and a “all purpose” lense… watch on amazon and also check best buy b/c we got our camera on sale at best buy and they do go on sale (cheaper than online sometime) from time to time. We have a Cannon Rebel and I LOVE, LOVE it! (like I said, I have had it for 2 yrs and have had no probs with it)
Good luck!
Sorry to hear about your camera. That definitely is a total bummer when that happens. I do love my DSLR but I got some gift certificates for my birthday and I got it when Best Buy was having a sale. It’s a Canon D60. And, as I like to tell people..it was my 40th birthday present AND party.
